Why use an online logo design service?
Ordering your logo online saves your company money and time. You also may have a wider variety of services online than you do locally. Online logo design services offer greater transparency in the sense of giving clear explanations of their design processes and prices, as well as portfolios of previous logo design work.
What is meant by a concept?
When you order logo design over the Internet or from a local designer, they will take some time and come up with some initial designs for you to review. These designs, called concepts, usually are very different in style. It’s not intended for you to choose one of these logos as your final logo. The purpose is to let you consider several different avenues, and then narrow it down to your favorite of the concepts. From there, most designers will fine-tune your choice, based on feedback from you, and revise it until you’ve got the perfect logo.
What is meant by a revision?
Once you have chosen a concept to work with, any changes made to that concept are referred to as revisions.
What is clip art?
Clip art is a general term for any graphic or icon that is part of an existing collection. Some logo design services may use clip art in your logo design. The plus side is that these services are usually lower in price since they are not spending the time or talent to create original artwork. The negative side is that the same clip art may show up in one of your competitor’s logos! (Note: with the exception of the Self-Service options, all of the companies profiled in this guide indicate that they do not use clip art to design your custom-made logo.)
Who owns the copyright to the finished logo?
All of the services profiled in this guide state that you own the copyright to the finished logo design, and you can trademark the design as well. However, it is in your best interest to investigate any possibility of copyright infringement prior to finalizing the design.
What do the file format types mean?

There are basically two types of graphic file formats: raster and bitmap.

Bitmap files (TIF, JPG, PSD, GIF, PNG) are made up of tiny pixels, and are therefore resolution based, which means that they can lose quality when resized. Many design services will provide several different sizes of each bitmap file format for this reason. The “lightest” of bitmap files are commonly used on the web (JPG, GIF, PNG), and are best for placing on a background.

Vector formats (EPS, AI) are comprised of points, lines, and fills, therefore taking up less file space and can be resized without loss of quality. With the proper software, vector formats are the easiest to revise, and work best for printers.

How does the Self-Service option work?
Companies who offer a service-service logo design option use what’s called a “wizard” at their site, which simply takes you through a series of steps to automatically create your logo design. Typical steps include: typing in your company/organization name, choosing a graphic from an online library, choosing a font, choosing a type style, and choosing a color scheme. Some services offer more control over the layout of your design than others.
Why would I want to choose the Self-Service option?
Using the self-service option saves even more time and money. If you are in a huge hurry to get a logo, you can download your files within just a few minutes, and the options start as low as $19.99. However, logos created with this option use shared graphics, so your logo may not be as unique as you’d like, and may also have a sub-par appearance in quality. If you’re looking for a truly professional logo, around which you intend to build your corporate identity and branding, spend the extra money for a team of professional designers.
What if I don’t like the logos I’m given?
Most of the services profiled promise unlimited revisions to your chosen design, so you can continue to tweak it until you’re happy. Some of the services offer a partial or full money-back guarantee if you are unhappy as well, but you should be sure you understand any terms for these guarantees before paying any money.
